So, I'm not sure if I'm supposed to announce myself so you know who is writing but, this is Whitney. This is the first time I have written in this blog-a big step for me since I have had my blogger blog forever and am always weary of change, but I'm excited to have one family blog.
Whew, where to start...well, I guess my title should kind of direct me. So I have realized some things over the past few weeks, namely: how much definition and stability your environment can give you. A couple weeks ago we packed all of our things and waved goodbye as allied vanlines drove off with pretty much all of our posessions-not that they're much but...still...
Since then we have lived at my parents' house, cody's grandparents' house, cody's parents' house, and now my aunt Cheryl's house in DC. Now we have loved staying with all of the above. We have been treated with love and hospitality and it has been fun but....it still isn't our home. I just never realized how much structure and stability I got from having a place where I could go where I could do anything I wanted without asking or worrying about putting someone out-a place to go at the end of the day and be home. It's weird cause before I was married things like that never really bothered me much-I felt like I was low-maintenance, didn't matter where I was etc., but somehow when you are married you instantly require your own space. Needless to say I canNOT wait to move in to our new home in Houston and have a routine again.
Another thing I have realized about long road trips: PACE YOURSELF! Which kind of applies to life as well. You can't just get up super early (cough 8:00 cough) every day and run out the door cramming every single little thing in and stumble in at ten o'clock at night day after day....it just doesn't work. Prioritize-plan your planned activities go crazy with them, but make sure to include some down time that is unstructured. The first day in DC we got on a bus to get to a metro to get to the National Mall (all because DC parking sucks during the week fyi) and then spent the entire day going from museum to monument etc. Don't get me wrong, it was fun, but a little extreme-we have a week here so why are we trying to do it all in one day??? As a result we slept in til almost noon today (I got up before Cody-that is huge!) and we went to the temple and nothing else cause we were so worn out from sight seeing. I dunno, all I'm saying is fight the temptation to do it "all"-whatever that word means. Quality over quantity my friend...I mean we barely did anything today and it was GREAT.
Now for some pics of our trip so far:
Some pics from the road
My birthday happened in three installments this year-i know, it was just so amazing that one couldn't handle it all at once. So before we left Houston Code gave me two presents that wouldn't fit without being noticed in the car: new bedding and a photo of where we got married-the Salt Lake Temple! Then in Georgia we went out to eat where the staff sang to me and stuffed whipped cream up my nose and then we went home and opened the rest of my presents where I got some of my fav dvds from code and an ihome from the fam and an intense cupcake-it was awesome. Then in DC-the actual day of- we went on a nature hike in the morning, went to georgetown cupcakes, the cheesecake factory, and saw "Liberty Smith-a musical" in Ford's Theatre. Thanks everyone!!!!
stay tuned- more to come...
